Kevin Colbert and his wife Sue were the driving force of the business from 1994-2017, as second-generation owners. An entrepreneur, visionary, and motivator, Kevin graduated from Naperville Central High School (Redskins) and holds a Marketing degree from Northern Illinois University.

Our History

Founded in 1987 by Tom and Mary Colbert, the business began as a Framin’ Place and Gallery franchise in Naperville's Gartner Plaza, following Tom’s early retirement from a successful retail management career. Drawing on decades of experience in store operations, Tom established a company grounded in professionalism, craftsmanship, and personalized service. When the franchise corporation dissolved, he continued independently and successfully until his retirement in 1995.

In 1996, Tom’s son Kevin Colbert with wife Susan Colbert officially purchased the business, rebranding it as Colbert Custom Framing to reflect its new independence and family ownership. They introduced the enduring slogan, “You’re Going to Love It!” and expanded to four locations before consolidating in 2011 into a single, larger facility—purposefully designed for efficiency and a higher standard of in-house production.

In 2006, Kevin expanded the company’s capabilities by adding large-format printing—enabling printing on canvas, fine art paper, and photo paper, as well as scanning, digital restoration, image editing, and professional reproductions. With this evolution, the business adopted the name Colbert Custom Framing & Art Printing to reflect its broader scope. Today, the company serves residential and corporate clients alike with custom-crafted solutions for display, décor, and preservation.

The early 2000s brought meaningful recognition: Small Business of the Year by the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce (2002), Retailer of the Year by the Suburban Business Ledger (2003), and finalist honors in Loyola University Chicago’s Illinois Family Business of the Year awards (2004). The Colberts also prioritized community engagement, serving on the boards of local nonprofit organizations—including Rotary—and supporting numerous charitable fundraisers through in-kind donations.

In 2017, Kevin and Susan’s daughter, Stephanie Colbert Randall, became the third-generation owner. Under her leadership, the business added custom rotary engraving—offering diamond- or carbide-bit engraving on metal, glass, plastic, wood, and other materials—broadening both artistic and commercial capabilities.

An active Rotarian, Stephanie continues the family’s tradition of community service through volunteer work and in-kind support of local nonprofit events. She and her husband Jason Randall, a professional church musician and private piano instructor, live in Naperville with their three young daughters.
What began as a small franchise storefront has grown into a respected, multi-generational family business—delivering creativity, quality, and care to homes and businesses throughout the community.
